We're Still Measuring AI in Horsepower

I gave Claude Code a goal the other week, not a question. Build the site, push it live. I did not sit there trading messages with it. I set the outcome, stepped back, broke the job into pieces, did each one, and handed me a finished website. The whole thing took minutes.

For most people, that is not what the word "AI" means. Their picture is a chat box. You type, it types back, you type again. Words in, words out, a conversation you steer one line at a time. That picture is the ceiling of what they let the tool be.

Here is the frame I keep coming back to. When cars first arrived, we had no word for them, so we called them horseless carriages. We measured them in horsepower, in units of the animal they replaced. More than a century later, we still say horsepower, still describing the engine in terms of the horse.

We are doing the same thing with AI. We meet a genuinely new kind of machine, and we reach for the language of the old one, the keyboard and the conversation. So we get better and better at chatting with something that was never built to chat.

Operational AI is the other thing. Give it a goal and the context it needs, and it does the work. It breaks the goal down, runs many steps at once, and builds the actual asset you were going to spend your whole week on. That is a different category of thing from a smarter text reply.

This is the pattern every time something new arrives. We reach for the nearest old word, and it decides how big we let the new thing become. The carriage makers who kept measuring in horses did not lose to a faster horse. They lost to the people who stopped thinking in horses at all.

Ask for the Asset, Not the Advice

You do not need an agent with hands to start thinking this way. You can practice the shift today in Claude or ChatGPT, and it changes more than it looks like it should. Stop asking for advice about the thing, and ask for the thing itself. Give it the outcome and your context, and have it hand you the finished asset instead of a conversation about the asset.

Run it on the one asset you were about to spend an afternoon writing, and see how much of it comes back already built.

The Thing Without Its Old Name

Find a few still minutes. No screen, nothing to solve.

Bring to mind something new that has come into your life this year. A tool, a role, a relationship, a season you did not plan for. Notice the words you use for it. Almost always they are borrowed from something older and familiar, the nearest thing you already knew.

Now sit with the new thing for a moment without its old name. Do not try to define it or decide what it is for. Just let it be unfamiliar. Feel the small resistance in that, the pull to file it under something you already understand.

Breathe there. Notice what you can start to see about it, once you stop insisting it is a version of something you have met before.

I said the horseless-carriage line out loud for the first time on a podcast a couple of weeks back, mid-sentence, reaching for a way to explain what AI has actually become. It landed in the room. It also named the trap I keep falling into myself.

I teach operational AI. I stand in front of rooms and tell people the tool has hands now, that you set a goal and let it work. And then I catch myself at my own desk, typing back and forth with it line by line, steering every single step, using a machine that could build the whole thing as if it were a slightly faster place to have a chat. The old frame is sticky.

I see the same pull in the teams I work with through Humane Business. They bring AI in expecting it to change how the week feels, then hand it the same narrow jobs they were already doing by hand, one keystroke at a time. The tool is new. The frame around it is old. And the frame is what caps the result.

So the question I am sitting with this week is not how to get better at talking to it. It is how often I could just say what I actually want and let go of the keyboard.
