What your AI must ask you first

Hello Reader,

Each week, I share one insight, one prompt, and a short grounding practice to help you grow with AI in alignment, not overwhelm.

This is for conscious entrepreneurs who value substance over shortcuts.

AI Insight That Matters 💡

Four Agents in Ten Weeks

On October 21, Anthropic launched Claude Duet. It connects to your email, calendar, and files. It sends you a short brief each morning and checks your apps every few hours. It also does tasks for you on its own computer, online, while yours is shut. xAI's Grok Bot went into beta on August 11. Meta's Muse arrived on September 8. OpenAI's Dots came on September 29. That's four companies in ten weeks, all selling the same thing: an assistant that keeps working after you close the laptop. The industry term is an agent.

I've run agents like this on my own machine since the spring. Every weekday at 8:45am, one of them carries yesterday's unfinished tasks into today's note. On Monday mornings, another drafts my weekly priorities for me to review against my energy and what I want to create.

Two weeks ago I taught the anatomy like this. The brain is the model. The memory is your files. The hands are what it's allowed to touch. The heartbeat is the schedule. Without a heartbeat, it's a tool you run when you need it. With one, it's an agent that runs without you.

As agents become easier to use and more useful, the important question becomes what has to come back to you first? What role do you, the human, want to play in this new era?

Duet asks before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes a file. A Dot prepares some work for your approval instead of finishing it. Grok Bot is built to learn when to interrupt you. Each company puts the same decision near the top: the list of things the agent must ask first.

In my own setup, the boundaries list is short and firm. My agents may write suggestions into one section of my daily to-do note, and nowhere else. Nothing reaches my actual list unless I move it there myself. They can draft anything they like, and nothing gets sent or deleted unless I do it.

Soon an always-on agent will be the new normal for everyone. The AI companies decide what their agents can do. We get to decide where our boundaries lie.

AI Prompt That Works ✨

Write Your Ask-Me-First List

Use this before you switch on any assistant that works without you. That could be one of the four above, or a scheduled task in a tool you already have. It runs in any AI chat, such as Claude or ChatGPT. Paste the prompt below, which is the text in the box. The AI asks you about your work, one question at a time. Then it writes a one-page list in three parts. What it may do on its own. What it may do as long as it tells you. What it must always ask you first. Keep the page. When an agent arrives in your software, this is the first thing you give it.

The Prompt:

Act as the person helping me set up an assistant that works on my behalf while I'm away from my desk.

Ask me, one question at a time, about the work I do, the tools I use, who I write to, and where money, contracts and client information are involved. Stop after each question and wait for my answer.

When you have enough, write a one-page list in three parts:
1. Do it without me.
2. Do it, then tell me.
3. Always ask me first.

Put anything that cannot be undone in part 3. Sending, paying, signing, deleting and anything a client would read go there unless I tell you otherwise.

Do not guess at my work or add tasks I have not mentioned. If you are unsure which part something belongs in, ask me.

Part 3 is the one to get right. If something on your list would be hard to undo and isn't there, move it before you hand the page to an assistant.

Grounding Practice ☯

What Doesn't Need Doing?

Sit for a few minutes, somewhere you won't be interrupted. Let your breath settle on its own.

Bring to mind the parts of your life that will never be automated. A person. A place. Something you do with your hands for no reason except that you love it.

Pick one and stay with it. Notice that it asks nothing of you. It doesn't need to be faster, or finished, or improved.

If your mind drifts to the list of things waiting for you, let it, then come back.

Before you open your eyes, say thank you, silently, to whatever you chose.

Personal Note ❤️‍🔥

"Let us see to it that the recollection of those whom we have lost becomes a pleasant memory to us."
- Seneca

I didn't email you the last two Fridays. My Mum passed, and I've been with my family, saying goodbye to her.

I turned up for the sessions I'd promised, because people were counting on me, and I was glad to have somewhere to be. The rest I let go.

I teach people to put the human first. These weeks have reminded me what that means, and why it matters. It reinforces that family comes first, and that we need to cherish everyone around us.

Showing up to help others takes on a greater meaning when you're reminded how fleeting this life is. Years go by in an instant, and losing someone you love magnifies what a life means.

Grief doesn't come when you set time aside for it. It turns up while you're making a cup of tea, and then it goes, and then it comes back. I've stopped trying to manage it and am trying to flow with it.

If you've lost someone, you know all this. Regardless, hold your loved ones close, and don't wait "until..." to do it. There is no until, only now...

Thank you for being here. It means more than usual 🙏.
