Don't bet on the winning AI

Hello Reader,

Each week, I share one insight, one prompt, and a short grounding practice to help you grow with AI in alignment, not overwhelm.

This is for conscious entrepreneurs who value substance over shortcuts.

AI Insight That Matters πŸ’‘

Own the Context, Not the Tool

The morning of my last big workshop, I walked into the green room to teach over 600 coaches how to build their businesses with Claude. Everything in the session pointed to one platform. And that same morning, OpenAI shipped a direct rival to the exact kind of tool I was about to teach, a new agent for work sitting right on top of everything I had spent weeks preparing people to do somewhere else.

The obvious question hung in the air, the one a sharp person in that room would be right to ask. Did we just bet on the wrong tool?

Here is the answer I gave, and it is the thing I want you to take away here.

We do not teach a tool. We teach you to build your context, your ideal client, your offer, your voice, the rules for how you work, into plain files that you own.

Everything you make lives as ordinary text on your own machine. Files in folders. Nothing more.

We go deep on one tool because depth beats dabbling, not because you are trapped inside it.

That is the shift most people miss about this whole moment. They treat the tool as the asset and pour their real thinking into a chat window they do not own, inside an app that could change its price, its rules, or its name next week.

The tool is rented. The context is owned.

When a shinier tool arrives, and one always does, the owned thing walks out the door with you, and the rented thing evaporates.

For the oldies in the room like me, do you still have access to your Myspace posts?

This runs far past AI. Anything you build inside someone else's walls is rented. Your following on a platform, a business that lives in one channel, a skill that only works at one company.

What you actually own is what you can carry out the door. So the question is never which tool is winning this week. It is what you are building that survives forever. This is why I built the Human Stack.

AI Prompt That Works ✨

Get Your Context Out of the Chat Window

The way to make yourself portable is to stop keeping your context in your head and in a hundred scattered chats, and put it in one plain file you own. You can build that file today, in Claude or ChatGPT, and then paste it into any AI you ever use.

The Prompt:

Act as my onboarding interviewer. Your job is to help me produce one portable context document about my business that I can paste into any AI tool.

Ask me one question at a time, up to ten questions, to draw out: who I serve and what they struggle with, what I sell and how I say it, my voice and tone, the rules for how I want an AI to work with me, and anything about me that changes the answer.

When you have enough, stop asking and produce the finished document as clean markdown under clear headings, written so any AI could read it and know who it is working for. No commentary, just the document, ready for me to save as a file.

Save what it hands back as a plain text file on your own machine, and you have the start of a context you own, not a context you rent.

Grounding Practice ☯

What You Own, What You Rent

Find a few still minutes. No screen, nothing to fix.

Let your attention move over your ordinary week. The places you put your energy, your care, your best thinking. Some of what you build there is yours to keep. Some of it lives on ground you are only renting, and would vanish if the ground shifted under you.

Do not sort it into good or bad. Just notice which is which. The work that would still be yours if the tool disappeared. The part of you that is on loan to a platform, a role, a single outcome.

Stay with whatever comes up, even the discomfort of seeing how much you have handed over. You do not need to change anything today. Just feel the difference between what you own and what you hold on lease.

Personal Note ❀️‍πŸ”₯

β€œSome things are within our power, and some are not.” β€” Epictetus, Enchiridion

Years ago, I lost a morning's writing to a sync tool that decided its version of my file was the real one and overwrote mine. Not a crash, not my mistake. A piece of software I had trusted to hold my work handed me back an older, emptier version. I sat there staring at the gap where the words had been, feeling a little despair.

That is the small, unglamorous root of how I work now.

Everything I think and build lives as plain text files on my own machine, in a structure I can read without any particular app.

The whole system I teach, the one the coaching program and the teams at Humane Business run on, grew out of that morning and other experiences like that.

Not from a clever idea about portability. From a burn.

And I still catch myself renting. I will pour twenty minutes of real thinking into a chat window I do not own, watch something good take shape, then close the tab and let it go, the way you leave furniture behind in a flat you are moving out of. I teach people to extract the gold from AI so it isn't lost. I don't always do this (physician, heal thyself).

So this week I am sitting less with the tools and more with a plainer question. Of the things I am making right now, how many could I actually take with me, and how many am I building on ground that is not mine?
