The Intelligence Briefing

A gift that sells is a brochure

Hello Reader,

Each week, I share one insight, one prompt, and a short grounding practice to help you grow with AI in alignment, not overwhelm.

This is for conscious entrepreneurs who value substance over shortcuts.

AI Insight That Matters 💡

The Gift Carries No Pitch

On Tuesday evening, I delivered a session for a small group inside a community I had been invited into. I made one promise: I was not there to sell them anything, and the one follow-up they would get from me was a useful thing, free, no strings.

The test of a promise like that comes later, in the details.

Wednesday morning, I built the follow-up in Claude Code: a two-page guide they could put to work the same day. Kit, my email platform, cannot attach a file to a broadcast, so the PDF went up on our website, and the email carried the link. Standard stuff. An hour before sending, I read the PDF footer and found a link to our advisory offer at the bottom of the gift.

Hang on! I said I wasn't trying to sell anything, and here I am selling something?

The reflex put it there. Every template and every example of marketing training says the same thing: you have their attention, use it.

I stopped and asked one question. Is this in the spirit of what I said on Tuesday?

It was not.

But Colin, marketers like you always say "you need a Call To Action (CTA)."

It was drilled into me the same as it was drilled into you. I taught marketing. I did some of the drilling.

Nobody says yes to you until they believe a few things first. Their problem can be fixed. Your way of fixing it works. You mean what you say. I teach this as the Chain of Beliefs.

A call to action can't create any of those beliefs. It can only ask people to act on what they already believe. Creating belief is the gift's job. That's why the pitch in the footer had to go: it was asking for a yes from people who had no reason to give one yet. Read that again and let it sink in. It's important because where your ideal prospective clients are at right now always trumps what marketers like me say in blanket statements like "always have a CTA."

So the offer moved into the email, where it belongs. The people who get the email signed up and heard me speak on Tuesday. They're ready to be asked. The PDF doesn't stop with them. It gets forwarded to people who've never heard of me. All a stranger wants to know is whether it's any good and whether I'm worth listening to. A clean gift answers that on its own.

Anything you give away travels further than the person you gave it to. Build it for the second reader.

The moment a gift starts selling, it stops being a gift and becomes a brochure.

AI Prompt That Works ✨

Strip the Pitch Out of Your Gift

Take one thing you currently give away: your lead magnet, your welcome PDF, the follow-up you send after a call or a workshop. Paste the full text into Claude or ChatGPT and let it find what your reflexes put in there. Think of it as the Second Reader Test: the whole piece read through the eyes of someone it was forwarded to.

The Prompt:

Here is something I give away to prospects or new
subscribers. [Paste the full text or upload the file.]
First, read it as the second reader: someone it was
forwarded to, who never signed up and has never heard of me.
Then go through it line by line and separate two jobs that have been mixed together.
1. GIVING. Every line that teaches, helps, or hands
the reader something they can use.
2. SELLING. Every line that promotes, links to an
offer, hints at one, or asks for anything back.
Include the subtle ones: the bio that reads like a
pitch, the "want to go deeper?" footer, the
testimonial doing sales work.
Show me both lists first. For each SELLING line, name
where that ask would be welcome: the email that delivers this gift, a follow-up conversation, or nowhere yet.
Then rewrite the piece with the selling removed and
nothing else changed. My name and website stay, as plain attribution.
Last, take the offer you found in the SELLING lines
and write one short honest paragraph making it
directly, for the email that delivers this gift. If
no clear offer appears in the text, ask me what it
is before writing. The offer appears there, once,
and nowhere else.

You will end up with a cleaner gift and a better ask than the one you buried. Run the Second Reader Test on your lead magnet this afternoon and see what it finds in the footer.

Grounding Practice ☯

Giving Without The Hook

Sit for three minutes, somewhere quiet, nothing in your hands.

Bring to mind the last thing you gave someone. Advice, an introduction, your time, a referral. Hold the moment without judging it.

Now look for the thread. Somewhere in most giving there is a thin line of expectation running back to us: the hope of being thanked, remembered, chosen later. Do not scold yourself for it. Just find it, and feel where it sits in the body.

On an out breath, practice letting the thread go. The gift stays given. Nothing comes back along the line, and see if you can let that be complete.

Notice what giving feels like without the thread. That feeling is available in the next thing you give away.

Personal Note ❤️‍🔥

“If you seek tranquillity, do less.” — Marcus Aurelius, quoting Democritus

Four weeks running, the book sat at the top of my weekly priorities file. Four weeks running, it slipped.

Every Monday I wrote it back in. Every Friday it was still there, untouched, while two live programs, a stack of videos, and everything else that actually had a deadline ate the week. And every Friday it cost me something, seeing a thing you care about still waiting.

This week I deleted it from the list, because the list was lying. The honest version of my August has no room for a manuscript, and writing "book" at the top of a week that cannot hold it is decoration.

So the book is now September's work. A decision made on purpose, with a date on it.

What surprised me is the relief. I thought taking it off the list would feel like giving up. It felt like putting something down. An intention you carry without acting on it charges emotional rent every week, and the rent is how you feel about yourself on Friday. It is the same lesson the footer taught me. Ask an apple to be an orange, and it will do a bad job of it.

The book is real, and it will get whole mornings in September instead of scraps in August.

What is at the top of your list right now that is a hope with a meaningless deadline? Hit reply and tell me. I read every one.
